Stronger Voices, Safer Spaces

April 2025 marks the 24th Sexual Assault Awareness Month observed in the United States. SAAM began just eight years after the enactment of the Violence Against Women Act by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. The NSVRC created SAAM as a formal declaration of spreading awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment and abuse. The NSVRC’s founders strongly believed, “It’s impossible to prevent an issue no one knows about, and it’s difficult to make people aware of a problem without providing a solution.” Meaning, the fight to end sexual violence is unattainable without arming the general public with knowledge about the prevalence of sexual violence and adequate resources.

Columbia’s student organization- SAAEC (Sexual Assault Awareness Education Committee) created the tagline "Stronger Voices, Safer Spaces" to emphasize the importance of empowering individuals to speak out against sexual violence while fostering an environment of safety, support, and inclusivity. This reflects the committee’s belief that when survivors and advocates come together to share their experiences, raise awareness, and educate others, they strengthen the collective voice against sexual assault. It also highlights the need for safe spaces where individuals feel protected, heard, and supported throughout the healing and advocacy process. Merging these two ideas, the committee seeks to create a community where dialogue is encouraged, and everyone can contribute to building a culture of respect, safety, and accountability.
