Community Conversation facilitated by David Herrera

A community conversation platforming the cultural moment in the intersectional Latinx dance community facilitated by David Herrera, Artistic Director/Choreographer of David Herrera Performance Company and Director of Latinx Hispanic Dancers United.

David Herrera is a choreographer, producer, and respected national community leader. Through his San Francisco-based David Herrera Performance Company, he boldly centers Latinx/e voices and aesthetics, challenging norms and expanding representation. As Director of Latinx Hispanic Dancers United, he forges connections among Latinx/e dance artists nationwide, building a vibrant, unified network. Raised in Hollywood, CA and deeply rooted in both Mexican and American heritage, David is a passionate advocate for equity and access for Latinx and BIPOC artists. In 2007, he founded his company to confront and remedy the persistent lack of Latinx representation in the national dance field. His full-evening works, spanning themes of identity and belonging, include ÒRALE!, The Tip of My Tongue, The Least of Them, TOUCH, and Slumber.

David’s leadership includes being the current Co-chair of Dance USA's inaugural Latinx Network (2026) and serving as a 4-year Co-curator for Yerba Buena Gardens Festival’s Choreofest (2023–26), further amplifying Latinx leadership on a national stage. He has been a National Latino Arts & Culture Leadership Fellow and a Bridge Live Arts Community Engagement Resident. He has served in an advisory capacity to the Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers (SF), Latinx Movement Festival (DC), and Dancing Around Race. David is also a dedicated mentor, guiding emerging dance makers through DHPCo’s own LatinXtensions mentorship program, Deborah Slater’s Studio 210 Residency, and empowering individuals in homelessness rehabilitation through the Community Housing Partnership.

David’s work has received support from major funders, including the California Arts Council, SF Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Wattis Foundation, Fleishhacker Foundation, Center for Cultural Innovation, CA$H Grant, and Puffin Foundation.

David has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, San Francisco Arts Commission, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Berkeley Civic Arts Commission, and CA$H Grant. Additionally, he has served as a panelist for ODC Theater’s QBIPOC Space Residency, Studio 210 Residency, and Bridge Live Arts - Community Engagement Residency.

He holds a B.A. in American Studies with an emphasis on Evolution of Culture, as well as a B.A. and Graduate Certificate in Theater Arts from UC Santa Cruz.
