Chicago’s Record Row
Details
Wednesday, August 27
11am-1pm
Meet at the Dance Center
Details: From the 1950s to the 1970s, a stretch of South Michigan Avenue from 14th Street to Cermak Ave. was the epicenter of a buzzing community of musicians, producers, distributors, and record labels making some of the most influential rock and roll, R&B, and blues recordings in the history of American music. On this walking tour, we will see the sights and hear the sounds of popular music created on Record Row – including recordings by Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Etta James, the Jackson Five, Chuck Berry, Fontella Bass, the Rolling Stones, and more!
This tour requires about one mile of walking – wear comfortable shoes and bring a few bucks if you want to pick up a coffee at Overflow, which is on the site where Vee-Jay and Brunswick Records once stood.
Your tour guide will be Dr. Nate Bakkum, Associate Professor in the School of Audio and Music and Senior Associate Provost for Academic Operations. Nate is a scholar of American music, an awkward recording nerd, and a lover of all things Chicago music.
