Sound and Image is a program that brings together two Emerita Professors who taught at Columbia College Chicago; Paul Hettel from the Film Department, and Gustavo Leone from the Music Department. During their tenure, they worked together at combining the two arts, film and music. Hettel and Leone were instrumental in the creation of the MFA in Composition for the Screen that opened in 2006 at the Music Department of Columbia College Chicago.
This program is made of films with electronic soundtracks, live performances for instrumental music and fixed media, and real time projections.

Paul Hettel
Paul Hettel is a distinguished filmmaker with a career spanning over fifty years. During this time, he has not only written and directed six feature films but has also made over thirty-five short narrative, documentary, and experimental films, showcasing his versatility and creativity. He has been collaborating with composer, Gustavo Leone for 30 years.
Paul Hettel has captured captivating visuals from various corners of the world. He has embarked on filmmaking journeys in Poland, Italy, Cyprus, Canada, Bolivia, and the United States, infusing his works with a diverse cultural perspective.
His films have received international acclaim and have been screened in prestigious venues across Europe, South America, Mexico, Canada, Japan, and the United States.
Beyond his filmmaking expertise, Paul Hettel has made significant contributions to education. As a Professor, Emeritus at Columbia College, Chicago, in the Department of Film and Television Arts, he has nurtured young talents and shared his wisdom with aspiring filmmakers. His areas of specialization include Production, Editing, Screenwriting, Cinematic Essay, French and Italian Cinema, imparting a comprehensive understanding of the art of filmmaking.
Continuing to push boundaries and explore new artistic endeavors, Paul's latest feature film, "In Aphrodite's Web," is currently in postproduction, further adding to his impressive filmography. His work can be viewed here https://www.film242.com/index.html
Gustavo Leone
Composer Gustavo Leone is a Professor Emeritus of Music at the Department of Fine and Performing Arts of Loyola University Chicago. His principal composition teachers included Gerardo Gandini, Ralph Shapey, and Shulamit Ran. He also studied electronic music with Howard Sandroff. Leone is a recipient of a Walter Hinrichsen Award given by the American Academy of Art and Letters. His music is included in the catalogs of C.F. Peters, New York, Toccata Classics, Naxos Recordings and Theodore Front Music Literature. Ensembles such as Cuarteto Q-Arte, Grant Park Festival Orchestra, Wiener Kammerorchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra of Michoacán, the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, amongst others, have played and commissioned Leone’s works. His work for the theater includes productions at the Yale Repertory Theatre, the Goodman Theater, Victory Gardens Theater, and Teatro Vista.
Rick Ferguson
An active chamber musician and avid recital partner, Rick Ferguson was selected to be a senior fellow for the Chicago Chamber Musicians and has performed chamber music, solo, and concerto repertoire in the US and Europe. He maintains an active life as teacher, composer, and arts advocate as co-founder and artistic director of The Musical Offering in Evanston, Illinois, and formerly as classical piano instructor at the Chicago Academy for the Arts. On the composition side, Concerto Grosso on Dystopian Themes for youth orchestra is a commissioned work through Foundation 65 in Evanston, Illinois, which premiered in May 2018. Additional pieces in the works are Equity Suite for concert band and Prelude, Toccata and Fugue for piano and percussion ensemble. Upcoming commissions include On Beauty for soprano, violin and piano on a text by Kahlil Gibran.
