About Aikido & FAQs

What is Aikido?

The Japanese martial art of Aikido is a comprehensive system of throwing, joint-locking, striking and pinning techniques, coupled with training in traditional Japanese weapons such as the sword, staff and knife. Founded by Morihei Ueshiba early in the twentieth century following his own extensive study of various armed and unarmed martial systems, Aikido represents a potent distillation of centuries of Japanese martial knowledge. It is one of the most widely practiced budo, or martial way, in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to wear a gi (uniform)?

We recommend you wear something comfortable and easy to move in that covers your knees for your first class. Sweatpants or exercise leggings and a t-shirt works well. Most people purchase a gi when they feel comfortable doing so, typically after at least a few classes but prior to testing for rank or attending your first seminar.

Fall '22 is our first semester as an official club on campus. The majority of our members will be new to aikido and will begin without a gi.

Are there club dues?

Our current plan is to make club dues optional and affordable, though paying dues will have many benefits. You currently do not need to pay dues to attend on-campus aikido classes.

What style of Aikido is practiced?

We practice Aikikai-style aikido through Aikido Association of America.

Who teaches the club?

The club is run by senior students (Sempai) and guest teachers (Sensei) who are willing to donate some of their time to the club. Different instructors may teach things differently, and all have something unique to contribute.

I don't know how to ___, can I still join?

Of course! Everyone starts somewhere. Your first class, you will be able to learn most of the etiquette and warm-ups by shadowing, and you'll be given instruction on how to safely fall and roll.

I already know how to___, should I still join?

Absolutely! Even if you have experience with aikido or any aspect of what we do, it's still good to practice regularly. There's always something new to learn, regardless of ability level.
