What is President Bolton’s background in higher education?
President Bolton is originally from Saint Louis, MO, and has built an impressive résumé working at prestigious institutions like Georgia Tech, Tulane University, Washington University, and Tuskegee University. “I began my career in higher education as an adjunct professor at a small community college in Florida, where I fell in love with learning the unique stories of each student and how they individually decide their direction in life through education,” she said. Now, she’s stepping into her biggest role yet as Columbia’s 11th President and Chief Executive Officer.
What brought President Bolton to Columbia?
After working with students across the country, President Bolton says she felt instantly drawn to Columbia’s one-of-a-kind culture. “The culture and energy of Columbia is infectious,” she shared. She also holds a deep appreciation for the rich cultural legacy of both Chicago and Columbia College Chicago. More than anything, she can’t wait to meet the students behind the vivacious energy of the college.
What is President Bolton’s primary goal for the college?
President Bolton is focused on supporting Columbia students in becoming the next generation of "cultural innovators." She believes students—from filmmakers and photographers to dancers and designers—are the heart of both the college and broader cultural conversations. One of her key missions is to ensure the world knows about Columbia’s creative brilliance. “It’s time to stop being the best-kept secret,” she says.
Stepping into her new role, what challenges is she most excited about?
President Bolton’s top priority is to help ensure that students not only graduate but also thrive as professionals. She aims to cultivate creativity both inside and outside the classroom, championing creative problem-solving in all aspects of life. Additionally, she is committed to spotlighting Columbia’s talented faculty and expanding opportunities for students to build their networks, portfolios, and real-world experience. She emphasizes the uniqueness and effectiveness of Columbia’s faculty—many of whom are active working professionals—a distinctive quality that also drew her to the institution.
What does President Bolton like to do for fun?
When she isn’t in the office, she likes to relax with a hands-on creative project, just like the students of Columbia. One of her passion projects is creating glitter shoes that show off her love of sparkle, shoes, and self-expression. She’s hoping to debut her shimmering shoes at Manifest, so keep your eye out for some eye-catching twinkle toes!
What are some places in Chicago President Bolton is looking forward to visiting?
Chicago is still new to President Bolton, but she’s ecstatic to attend the showcases at Manifest. Be sure to save her a front-row seat at the fashion show! She’s also looking forward to exploring the city’s famed and diverse food scene. As a St. Louis native with a love of barbecue, she’s eager to visit Lem’s Bar-B-Q, a southside staple that recently received a prestigious James Beard Award.
