A warm welcome to new and returning Columbia scholars and staff! We are so excited to start the year with all of you, and to make it a memorable one. Coming back to school this fall the college has undergone a few changes, which you’ll get familiar with in this week’s In The Loop. We encourage you to use these new resources to your advantage, whether you’re a new or returning student. In the meantime, here are some pieces of advice from Student Communications:
1. Bring any questions you may have to Columbia Central (600 S. Michigan) or the Student Center (754 S. Wabash)! From scheduling to campus card help, we're here for you!
2. Use your spaces! While you're familarisizing yourself with campus, make sure to check out student spaces that are curated just for you. The Hive (618 S Michigan) is full of musical equipment, practice performance areas, studying sections and snack! And never forget about our lovely student center! This is best place to meet up with other students, grab a bite to eat, study, craft, work out, game and so much more.
3. Check Engage every week! Columbia has something going on every week, if not every day! Download the engage app or bookmark the website on your laptop, look under the "Events" tab and scroll away! Events and student groups are constantly being added, so you won't want to miss out on finding your people. (P.S. stay tuned for our weekly Thursday emails where we let you know what the hottest events on campus are!)
4. Spend the weekends exploring! If you're a new student, we know how tempting it can be to spend the weekend back home or squared away in your dorm. Fight that urge! Chicago always has events, pop-ups, concerts and other once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The more time you spend hopping on new trains and walking down new streets, the more you'll find your way around here.
5. Don't forget that student discount! Discounted prices at the Shedd Aquarium, gym memberships, restuarants, retail stores and so much more. My personal favorite student perk is free entry at the Art Institute of Chicago! Anytime you make a purchase, don't be afraid to flash your Columbia ID!
