The Bluest Eye, directed by Ashley Keys and playwritten by Lydia Diamond, is a phenomenal piece of theater that is showing in your back pocket, Columbia's own 72E 11th street building!
Based off of Toni Morrison's Nobel Prize-winning novel, The Bluest Eye is a about the tragic life of a young black girl in 1940s Ohio. Eleven-year-old Pecola Breedlove wants nothing more than to be loved by her family and schoolmates. Instead, she faces constant ridicule and abuse. She blames her dark skin and prays for blue eyes, sure that love will follow. With rich language and bold vision, this powerful adaptation of an American classic explores the crippling toll that a legacy of racism has taken on a community, a family and an innocent girl.
The play itself is morbid in concept, but care and love is shown throughout the production. From the awe-inducing set to the experimental sound design, Columbia's most recent production of The Bluest Eye is a must-see. Audiences are transported to the hard world of the Breedloves where they sympathize, but are also forced to question their sympathy. These themes are aided by the actors' skills, as well. Each carries a unique fierceness that completely enhances the already intense subject matter. Through and through, you should go see this show before it closes on March 23rd, 2024!
