A few weeks ago, on March 31st 2023, sad-girl supergroup Boygenius released their debut album The Record, succeeding their self-titled EP back in 2018. The group consisting of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, have built their individual songwriting careers throughout the years, even before the release of their collab EP. Despite their individual successes, their three talents come together on The Record to make something deeply memorable and emotional.
The 12 track album takes the listener on a journey that feels nostalgic, reminiscent, and hopeful. With their opening track Without You Without Them, Boygenius reflects on the impact of family and friends, and family of friends, for making things they are now. Throughout the album, there’s a sense that the group believes everything is the way it is for a reason, the only thing we can do as people is move through and move on. However, this doesn’t mean we can’t look back on what’s happened and miss it. The group’s single Emily, I’m Sorry is an example of this, as Phoebe Bridgers reflects on the breakup of her and her partner Emily, apologizing for the bad, and missing the good.
The album feels like summers spent at home, reconnecting and reflecting, remembering the relationships had and the ones we’ve kept overtime, even through change. With melodramatic undertones, even in the most upbeat of their songs, The Record is something you’ll be singing and sobbing along to in the car this summer
