The latest feature film from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favorite, The Lobster) stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Yossef. The film, adapted from the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, is a dark comedy centered around recently reborn Bella Baxter (Stone) as she becomes independent from her creator and guardian (Dafoe), and sets off on a series of explorations that expose her to new places, new people, and new ways of thinking.
Above all, Emma Stone’s performance is particularly noteworthy, playing a character whose intelligence and personality grows in volumes over the course of the film. She is witty and charming, while also at times absurd and hilarious. Mark Ruffalo plays the rich and desperate Duncan Wedderburn, and in doing so brings a comedic moment to every scene.
Artistically, Poor Things is stocked to the brim with visuals that are reminiscent of art deco (specifically in set design) and neoclassical eras. The costuming is intricate and detail oriented; everything Emma Stone wears on screen is divine. The film is full of color, whether it be within the set or in costuming, and is reflective of the bright and bold new world Bella Baxter is just beginning to experience outside her home.
All in all, Poor Things is a worthwhile film that feels like a collage, but in the best possible way
