Whether you are a returning student or a new student-- I'm sure you've noticed that Columbia students are some of the busiest people alive. It's not uncommon to have a film student with a touring band, an art student who also writes screenplays, or even a music student that also runs a fashion blog. We do it all, all the time. So how are you supposed to stay on top of everything?
First of all, remember to breathe. We don't have to have every single flame burning on every single end! It's okay to set one of your projects down to finish your school work or vice versa. Just remember people are way more forgiving than you think, and no one will be mad at you for flaking on plans or turning an assignment a couple of hours late. It's always in your interest to be in the best possible state of mind you can be in. This way you can be proud of everything you produce because it was made from love not from stress.
Next, prioritize. I know updating your website may seem like the most important thing considering it is direct to your career. But also keep in mind how much money you are spending on your classes. You pay the faculty to give you feedback but they can't help you if you don't give your all to your assignments. As pointless as some of our schoolwork may seem, it's in your best interest to try your absolute hardest to invest in your own growth as an artist.
Lastly, put yourself first. Don't get me wrong- I love everyone here. Some of my favorite people in the entire world live three floors beneath me but as tempting as it is to hop on the blue line and spend the night with your friends, sometimes you have to resist. As sad as it can be to watch people you love have fun without you, it has to be done in order to get what you need done to be done. There will always be another party but there won't always be another oppurtunity to finish something for yourself.
