Being in new environments is bound to be an uncomfortable situatuon and it's totally normal to protect yourself when that time comes around. However, I encourage to go against your normal behavior and challenge yourself to go outside of your comfort zone. Embrace the uncomfortable and learn how to thrive within it.
As your classes begin, challenge yourself to put yourself out there and make yourself known. Now is the time to answer questions and make connections! It can be extremely intimidating to go into a classroom full of people and make yourself known, but the results are going to be so worth it.
Take it one step at a time! Turn to the nearest person and introduce yourself, ask them about why they took this class, their major, where they are from, or anything else you feel comfortable talking about. During your break ask someone else what they think of the class so far or what they think of their other classes. If you are really clicking with someone ask them to grab a coffee on their way home or to the next class. These things might seem scary at first but I guarantee you it will be a much better feeling in the long run once you've connected with your peers. Maybe interpersonal relatiosnhips is a little too much for your right now-- that's okay! Instead, try raising your hand to answer a teacher's question once in every class.
Take these new people and new environments to test your limits to see how far you can go. Make yourself known, present and outspoken this year.
