Hello, Columbia students or Columbia Grads! Welcome to summer! While summer is the best time to relax on the beach and take a break from the stress of school; it's important to remember that summer is also the best time to pursue YOUR creativity! In between your summer job, internship and binging your favorite TV show: take some time to remember these summer productivity tips!
1. Agendas and Scheduling
Don't put away that agenda just yet! Take some time at the beginning of every week to schedule some time for you to pursue your creative project. Set aside at least an hour a week towards inventing, crafting or creating. And stick to it! You have three months to go to the beach, why not spend a couple of hours working on something for you?
2. Journaling
When you have a free moment at work or during your lunch break, open up your Notes app or notebook! Writing down your intentions and ideas for your creative project can be just as productive as working on it. Sketch out some ideas or plot out your plans for the future! Even just venting about your feelings can lead to new avenues!
3. Be Present
While you should always prioritize yourself and your art, don't forget where you are! If you are at your internship, ask a mentor how they find time for themselves and creative endeavors. Open up your ears at your job and listen to what type of media people like to consume, they could be your target demographic. Or even walking down the street and paying attention to graffiti or murals can be eye-opening. You never know when inspiration strikes, so be ready for it!
4. Get Excited
As creatives, it can be draining to do the thing you love most. If you can't find any reason to pick up your pen or your paintbrush, it's time to get excited. Hit the Art Institute of Chicago or dig through Kanopy to find new films! Open yourself up to new genres, mediums, art forms, and ideas!
5. Try Something New
This is the best time to pick up a new hobby. Allow yourself the freedom to be try something new! Even if you aren't as skilled as you want to be, immerse yourself in the process and focus on what you can improve.
Writers: work with your hands! Try sculpting or sidewalk chalk or collaging. Painters: ever tried writing a poem? How about designing and sewing a skirt? Filmmakers: when's the last time you watercolor painted? Or even pick up weightlifting!
All in all, be proud of yourself! This was a hard semester and an even harder year; you made it out! Take this time to celebrate YOU and YOUR achievements. From everyone at Student Communications, we hope you have an amazing summer filled with creative ideas and relaxing fun. We'll see you soon!
