December is designated as AIDS Awareness Month to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, combat stigma, support those living with the virus, and remember those lost. For many people, HIV may feel like a distant issue, but millions of people across the world are living with the virus, and awareness is one of the strongest tools we have to support one another. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) affects the immune system, and without proper treatment, it can lead to AIDS. Thanks to decades of scientific progress, people with HIV who receive regular care and take their medications can live long, healthy lives. This is a huge shift from 30-40 years ago, when an AIDS diagnosis was often seen as a death sentence and treatment options were extremely limited. Early testing and staying informed are key, which is why awareness campaigns focus so heavily on understanding the facts rather than outdated stereotypes. This month also reminds us of the human side of the epidemic, the activism, strength, and community support that shaped the fight against HIV/AIDS. As students, we can help by educating ourselves, promoting accurate information, and encouraging open, judgment-free conversations. Raising awareness isn’t just about health, it’s about fostering a community that values understanding and care.
