Well, we are now a few weeks into the school year and chances are you are starting to settle into college life. For some of you that may be living away from home for the first time and for others you are getting the sense of a new space. I have curated a list of 5 dorm room tips for those who have ventured into the beautiful campus housing.
Tip #1: Sharing is caring- YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SHARE EVERYTHING! Share the spaces in your dorm rooms and find commonalities so that you can enjoy the space together. If something is bothering you, share suggestions that may avoid a dispute in the future. For example, if the dishes are being done, suggest that they wash their dishes right after they use them. But remember that living with another person is a two way street and that you need to take suggestions as well.
Tip #2: Go to community events- The RA’s work hard to put on community events each month that are fun for the residents. Find time to take a friend or go solo to these events. It is a great way to meet people in your building and possibly win some amazing prizes. I know the RA’s would love to see you there.
Tip #3: Create a flier board- Around campus there are amazing events that take place. When I lived in the dorms I found fliers around campus and put them on our fridge. My roommates started to do the same and it was a way to get the word out about events, even if we couldn't go to them. This was a great way that we promoted events in our departments for our roommates in other departments.
Tip #4: Ask an RA- The best way to get information is to ask your RA. They go through an extensive week-long training each semester to give you the most accurate information possible. No question is too small, they have the answer. Your RAs are there for you and they care that you have the most up to date information.
Tip #5: Make the most of your dorm room experience- Get to know your roommates even if you don't think you have anything in common, there will always be something. Talk to your roommates if something is bothering you, it is better to talk it out than let things marinate. Enjoy this time in your life, you have gained a little more independence and have moved on to the next chapter. Lastly, stay safe and have fun.
