Dia de los Muertos is here and it is time to welcome our ancestors back to reunite with us from November 1st to November 21st. This Mexican spiritual celebration, honors those who’ve passed and invites them back through the building of the ofrenda. The ofrenda is an altar that is constructed displaying pictures, food, flowers, and items of passed loved ones. To take part in Día de los Muertos festivities there are events being held on campus and throughout the city of Chicago.
Columbia’s Student Diversity and Inclusion office has created an altar on the 4th floor of the 618 building that is up for viewing until the end of November 21st. Students can also bring photos and items to place on the altar to honor your loved ones. There will also be a special performance by Liliana y Los Caballeros, showcasing the remarkable talents of our Columbia students and the Latinx community. The kick off event also encourages attendees to dress up, and will offer free face painting.
Other ways to participate in Día de los Muertos are by checking out the different events and art exhibits that are placed throughout the city. Little Village has a mural painted in 2019 by artist Elizabeth Rayes on the side of Nuevo Leon Restaurant, that represents the Day of the Dead and is beautifully colorful capturing the essence of the celebration. Other artistic works to check out is the giant ofrenda that is located in the Pilson area.
Whether you decide to join in citywide celebrations or honor privately, the Day of the Dead is to honor those who have come before us and welcome their spirits back to visit. Take the time to celebrate life and honor those who have come before. ¡Feliz Día de los Muertos!
