On display until April of this year, Canova: Sketching in Clay, is a sculptural exhibit covering over 30 of the 60 surviving clay works of Antonio Canova. Canova was best known for his work in marble sculptures, but often used clay to quickly bring his ideas to life in a 3D model. Those clay “sketches” are now available to see along with plaster casts and some finished marble sculptures.
Some highlights from the exhibit include Repentant Magdalene, completed in 1796, a 90cm marble sculpture, as well as clay models of Medusa’s head from his sculpture Perseus.
The exhibit runs from now until April 24th during usual museum hours and is included in regular museum admission. Remember, admission to the museum and special exhibits is free with your Columbia ID!
