I think we can all agree that it’s kind of difficult to really know what our personal style is in this world of fast fashion and short-lived TikTok clothing trends. I personally don’t have a TikTok account, but these trends penetrate throughout all social media platforms because of how powerful they are. As artists, our style can say a lot about us. Pre-Covid I went to a meeting with an executive from WarnerMedia and he had mentioned that personal style plays a large part in the interview process. He said that they want to see you have a sense of who you are and what you want. In fact, he was a confident, self-assured guy with fire red suede shoes. I’ll never forget what he wore and how they made me perceive him.
I don’t know about you, but it’s taken me a long time to find what my style is. As a senior, I feel like I’ve looked like a different person every year, sifting through different vibes as I’ve grown into a more self-aware and self-confident version of myself. I think the best way to find out what your style is so that you can feel self-assured when you step out into the world or into that interview, is to find yourself. Who are you at the core of your being? How can that reflect in what you choose to wear? What colors reflect your feelings or moods? In saying this, I’m not saying that you can’t or shouldn’t draw inspirations from trends, you absolutely can! I still do, but I pull pieces from the trends that fit with clothes that match my own unique style. Someone may dress similar to you, but they’ll wear different socks or different jewelry. Now, the outfit is automatically unique to them. If you’re struggling with style, connect with yourself. Find out who you are, then finding your style and expressing yourself won’t feel like such a challenge! Maybe someone will remember your shiny purple boots and think you have the power to set the world on fire!
Yours Truly,
