Something I’ve decided for myself is to start incorporating more hobbies into my life this semester. If you don’t have any hobbies, or you don’t carve out the time to enjoy the hobbies you already have, I encourage you to jump into it! Something I’ve been wanting to do for so long has been pottery. I recently asked myself: why haven’t I started? The answer to this question I believe is a universal one, why are we afraid to start anything? Fear of failure, or not being good enough. I think in our society, we feel pressure to have to be the best in everything we do, but I encourage you to do your best to detach yourself from this idea. It can hold us back from doing things that we really enjoy even if we’re not “the best” at them!
The way I’m approaching this is thinking: why do I need to be the best at this thing if I am not making it my living? I’m doing it as a way to relax and unwind from my work and school life. It’s a great way to meet more people who aren’t like you, but who may be just as passionate as you. Trying out new things helps you unlock parts of yourself that you didn’t know were there. It helps you learn more about who you are, what you don’t like and what you do. Plus, I’m sure there’s one thing we can all agree on: we need something that gives us a break from the normal, something to calm us down that is enjoyable. So, I encourage you to try something new, with no expectations: you do not need to be a professional at this, you just need to enjoy it! Sign up for the yoga class, go get a canvas and some paint brushes from Michael’s, or go fall off a skateboard and keep getting back up!
Yours Truly,
