With the first hints of fall coinciding with National Coming Out Day this week, why not get into the spirit with a few fallish films featuring LGBT storylines or LGBT actors? These 6 films are perfect for snuggling up with a cup of your favorite hot beverage, your S/O or your roommate. Get a dose of those fall vibes and enjoy the magic of movies!
1. JUNO (2006) Starring Elliot Page, this 2006 coming-of-age comedy is a touching and wholesome movie about family, first love, and all the adversities that come with growing up. Although the film moves through all four seasons, the themes of fresh starts and change typically associated with fall and the new school year are prominent throughout the film. With a killer cast and soundtrack, it’s basically a modern classic. The film is available to stream on HBO Max.
2. My Own Private Idaho (1991) This film based loosely on Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves tells the story of a gay man with narcolespy Mike Waters, and his best friend, as they travel across the country in search of Mike’s lost family. The warm look of the film along with River Phoenix’s rust colored jacket are all you need to put you in the spirit of fall. You can watch My Own Private Idaho now on the Criterion Channel.
3. Dead Poets Society (1989) Already a fall classic, how could it not be included in this list? Dead Poets Society follows a group of boarding school boys and their new English teacher, as they find identity and individuality. Although not explicitly a queer film, it’s queer subtext is undeniable. Visually, this dark academia film screams fall, you can practically feel the crisp air through the screen. You can rent the film on Amazon, Vudu, Apple TV or YouTube.
4. The Favourite (2018) Starring Emma Stone and Olivia Coleman, the story centers around Queen Anne and her relationships with friend Sarah and servant Abigail. The film is an exceptional look at bisexuality through a period lens. The cool toned environments mixed with the extravagant costumes give the film a fallish feel. The Favourite is available to rent on Amazon, Vudu, Apple TV and YouTube.
5. Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) An October cult classic! While it doesn’t quite fit with the tone of the other films on this list, Rocky Horror Picture Show is a campy, queer musical that should be on your watchlist this month, whether you’ve seen it before or not. The musical numbers are unforgettable and the makeup and costumes are perfect Halloween costume inspiration. Rocky Horror Picture Show is available to stream on HBO Max, and keep your eye out for local theaters doing showtimes this month!
6. Interview with the Vampire (1994) With a cast including Brad Pitt, Christian Slater, Tom Cruise and Kirsten Dunst, this is not your typical vampire flick. The story follows Louis, a man turned vampire, as he tells the story of how he was turned into a vampire, and his relationship with Lestat, the vampire who turned him. The film has a classic gothic look to it, with lots of flowing hair and gilded costumes and sets. If nothing else, this film proves Kirsten Dunst was born to act. Interview with the Vampire is available to stream on Tubi.
